Savannah Red Rice

Red rice is one of those side dishes that can turn into a main at any given moment.

This rich and spicy tomato rice, is based upon the West African dish Jollof. Both have onions and spices, but in The Low Country, Red Rice is filled to the seams with smoked sausage, tomatoes, bacon and shrimp.

I happen to call mine Savannah Red Rice, because that is where I'm from and because I happen to think it's the best.

We love to have it year round, but especially around Juneteenth since that's when you serve red foods to remember the blood that was shed from our enslaved ancestors.
